4 out of 10 injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work in 2001 were sprains or strains, most often involving the back. The number of cases of sprains and strains declined by 34.5 percent from 1992 to 2001, almost the same as the decline for all cases. From 2000 to 2001, the number of lost workday cases due to amputations decreased by 10.8 percent, while cases involving bruises and contusions declined 10.1 percent and those involving sprains and strains fell 8.0 percent.
